  15. <p>    During his eight-day odyssey through the land of the free,
  16. he lurched from speech to speech more like a back-of-the-pack
  17. presidential contender than an aspirant to the mantle of Lenin.
  18. But if jet lag, fatigue and generous helpings of Jack Daniel's
  19. occasionally took their toll, Boris Yeltsin, 58, the former
  20. Moscow party boss who has achieved unusual visibility and
  21. enormous popularity as one of Mikhail Gorbachev's most acerbic
  22. critics, still impressed Americans with his charm and
  23. appreciation of the U.S. His knack for an ingratiating riposte
  24. was apparent at John and Vicki Hardin's hog farm in Danville,
  25. Ind. "Would Mr. Yeltsin like to see some pigs?" the host asked.
  26. "I'd prefer to see some Americans," Yeltsin cracked, "but pigs
  27. will do."

  29. <p>    Behind Yeltsin's down-home humor was a stark message about
  30. the Soviet Union. The U.S.S.R., he warned, had barely a year,
  31. or less,to put its house in order. "We are on the edge of an
  32. abyss," he told the Council on Foreign Relations in New York
  33. City, "and if we go over the edge, it will lead to a cataclysm,
  34. not only for the Soviet Union but for the whole world."

  36. <p>    Yeltsin, who won an astonishing 89% of the Moscow vote in
  37. his election to the Congress of People's Deputies last March,
  38. reported the pitfalls facing perestroika to President Bush, Vice
  39. President Dan Quayle, Secretary of State James Baker and
  40. National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft, as well as thousands
  41. of ordinary Americans. And he had plenty of prescriptions for
  42. improvement: clean the deadwood from the Politburo; subordinate
  43. the party to the People's Congress; open up foreign investment.

  45. <p>    But Yeltsin's main target was what he called the weak
  46. leadership of Gorbachev. And for that, his campaign-style trip
  47. to the U.S.seemed to offer one solution: himself.
